Expression of selected molecular factors in two types of endometrial cancer

BACKGROUND Endometrial cancers (EC) are a heterogeneous group of malignant neoplasms differing in etiology, clinical-pathological features and prognosis. OBJECTIVES To determine the differences between the expression of selected molecular factors and find connections between them in order to isolate possible biomarkers influencing treatment options. MATERIAL AND METHODS The investigated data involved archival histological preparations obtained from uterine EC samples taken from 137 patients, treated surgically between 2007 and 2014. Identification of Altered Evoked and Non-Evoked Responses in a Heterologous Mouse Model of Endometriosis-Associated Pain.

The aim of this study was to develop and refine a heterologous mouse model of endometriosis-associated pain in which non-evoked responses, more relevant to the patient experience, were evaluated. Immunodeficient female mice (N = 24) were each implanted with four endometriotic human lesions (N = 12) or control tissue fat (N = 12) on the abdominal wall using tissue glue. Evoked pain responses were measured biweekly using von Frey filaments. Non-evoked responses were recorded weekly for 8 weeks using a home cage analysis (HCA). ABSTRACT Mutations in Drosophila Swiss cheese (SWS) or its vertebrate orthologue neuropathy target esterase (NTE), respectively, cause progressive neuronal degeneration in Drosophila and mice and a complex syndrome in humans that includes mental retardation, spastic paraplegia and blindness. SWS and NTE are widely expressed in neurons but can also be found in glia; however, their function in glia has, until now, remained unknown. We have used a knockdown approach to specifically address SWS function in glia and to probe for resulting neuronal dysfunctions. Population structure in Atlantic cod in the eastern North Sea-Skagerrak-Kattegat: early life stage dispersal and adult migration

Background In marine fish species, where pelagic egg and larvae drift with ocean currents, population structure has been suggested to be maintained by larval retention due to hydrographic structuring and by homing of adult fish to natal areas. Whilst natal homing of adults has been demonstrated for anadromous and coral reef fishes, there are few documented examples of philopatric migration in temperate marine fish species. Dynamics of CXC group chemokine platelet factor 4 (PF4) plasma levels in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

CXC chemokines display pleiotropic effects participating not only in inflammation, but regulating angiogenesis and metastatic spread in cancer. Platelet factor 4 (PF4) is a 70-amino acid protein belonging to the CXC chemokine family. PF4 is also known as CXCL4. This chemokine is released from alpha-granules of activated platelets and binds with high affinity to heparin-like molecules promoting coagulation. Megakaryocytes respond to the presence of tumors by increasing their number in the bone marrow accompanied by increase in the number of platelets in circulation, causing changes in chemokine balance.

mBISON: Finding miRNA target over-representation in gene lists from ChIP-sequencing data

Background Over-representation of predicted miRNA targets in sets of genes regulated by a given transcription factor (e.g. as defined by ChIP-sequencing experiments) helps to identify biologically relevant miRNA targets and is useful to get insight into post-transcriptional regulation. Findings To facilitate the application of this approach we have created the mBISON web-application. mBISON calculates the significance of over-representation of miRNA targets in a given non-ranked gene set.
